Organised crime research in Europe: development and stagnation

The study of organised crime has developed into a separate sub-discipline. While American researchers dominated the scene in the 1960s through the 1980s, Europe has emerged as the centre of organised crime research in recent years. Based on a review of the academic literature key trends will be highlighted regarding the institutionalization and funding of organised crime research as well as regarding research topics and methods. Critical challenges for future research will also be addressed. It is argued that while the richness of empirical studies distinguishes the European research arena, conceptually and theoretically few substantial advances have been made. In the future efforts need to be undertaken to ensure the continuity and political independence of organised crime research. This will require, inter alia, a reform of the funding schemes of the European Union.

The Cross-Border Crime Colloquium is an annual event since 1999. It brings together experts on international organised (economic) crime to discuss the latest developments in empirical research, legislation and law enforcement, with a special geographical focus on Western, Central, and Eastern Europe. The Colloquia aim at building bridges in three respects: between East and West Europe, between scholars and practitioners, and between old and young.
