Summary

Confiscation of profits and the fight against money laundering. Critical remarks on two financial-oriented crime fighting tools
Buggisch, Walter

According to many police officers and prosecutors the confiscation of profits and the fight against money laundering are very important and successful crime fighting tools. It is the purpose of this essay to take a critical look at these two financial-oriented tools. This approach might be a little bit unusual for an author who is also a member of the police force ? a police officer is expected to tell a success story and to support further expansion of the powers of law enforcement agencies within this area instead of criticizing it. In spite of that, this essay discusses some ? especially legal ? aspects of the confiscation of profits and the anti money laundering policy which have been criticized not only by scientists but also by police professionals. This essay will deal with some critical aspects of these law enforcement tools and it will show the topical state of discussion in Europe and especially in Germany.

About CCC

The Cross-Border Crime Colloquium is an annual event since 1999. It brings together experts on international organised (economic) crime to discuss the latest developments in empirical research, legislation and law enforcement, with a special geographical focus on Western, Central, and Eastern Europe. The Colloquia aim at building bridges in three respects: between East and West Europe, between scholars and practitioners, and between old and young.
